Melissa Martinez-Laverdiere

Fashion is my art. Clothing is much more than fabric. Each outfit is a one-day masterpiece, a runway of self, that connects me to the world.

What makes your style stand out?

My style is forever evolving, just as I am. Experimenting with colours, silhouettes, and accessories is where I shine. My goal is to break free from social norms and trends, turning heads along the way. What truly makes my style stand out is my authenticity and the ever-burning flame in my heart to create.

What’s your dream fashion moment?

My dream fashion moment is to see my designs walk down a runway one day. That moment would be deeply symbolic, representing the materialization of all the trials and tribulations I have overcome. Beyond that, it would be a dream to model for Victoria’s Secret or at Paris or New York Fashion Week. For me, it’s about more than fashion — it’s about showcasing the confidence I carry in my own skin as a plus-size woman and proving that labels never define true beauty.

What would you do with $20,000?

With $20,000, I’d gain the financial freedom to create a sustainable foundation for my art. I’d invest in a studio. My own space to live, work, and build a cohesive collection; while sourcing eco-friendly materials and repurposing clothing into new art pieces. Beyond advancing my career, this would also lay the groundwork for my younger sisters who are also art lovers, giving them a creative foundation to grow from to make a name for themselves.
