Using textiles and sustainable fashion to create looks that have an impact, that are rooted in research and that make me feel confident.
What makes your style stand out?
My cultural heritage has an important role into my personal style and the way I manipulate textiles and different garments. As someone that is passionate about textiles and the stories they hold, I use fabric to experiment and wear them in a creative and authentic way. Fashion is a tool for representation and storytelling – it is a way for me to express my creativity and make meaningful visuals that resonate with my artistic practice and my community.
What’s your dream fashion moment?
I believe I have lived my most recent dream related to fashion. I have been studying Dr. Christine Checinska's work or research around cloth and its relationship with culture - this month I have been given the honour to meet her and be the spokesperson for the Africa Fashion exhibition she curated for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London; now being hosted at the McCord Stewart Museum in Montreal. One of my next fashion related dream would be to have an internship with Robert Wun.
What would you do with $20,000?
With the right budget, my goal is to invest into my fashion and textile research and materials to give me the right intellectual and physical resources to develop my artistic practice. I would join a program in a field that passionates me and would invest in learning artisanal practices related to textiles and visual arts in my home country, Senegal.
