Jesse Werbow

Humans evolved recursive symbolic cognition, giving us the capacity to feel beauty. What may simply be plumage to a monkey is felt as style.

What makes your style stand out?

I like to channel a sense of trickster deity in my performed fashion. I go for bright colors and pastels that go beyond “trendy,” and hopefully to something a bit more mythic. I wear my hair wild and natural, and accentuate my face with piercings. I do not move through the world quietly.

What’s your dream fashion moment?

My dream fashion moments are primitive. Whenever someone reacts to my style with a sense of awe, even ephemerally, I feel pride and accomplishment. I don’t care what the venue is, each such moment is precious and unique.

What would you do with $20,000?

Immediately reinvest into social enterprise work to generate further funds for sustainable political activism. Direct charity is important, but I believe in building models that generate lasting impact. I would start by seeding a cooperative federation (think Mondragón in miniature) based on recycled goods processing and up-cycling, using profits to expand into new markets and support LGBT justice, racial justice, and community initiatives.
